Trust Horizon to help fund family fun at the Ōhope Chartered Club
The Ōhope Chartered Club is home to a bar, restaurant, and local community hub. Soon, it will also house a family-friendly café – thanks to almost $40,000 in funding from Trust Horizon.
Plans are underway for a range of improvements at the Club, designed to appeal to young families. “Clubs all over New Zealand are thinking about how to get the next generation along,” says Club president Chris Skews. “People with young kids have a different outlook on life. They want to be able to get a coffee and a meal without having to get a babysitter, and that’s what we’ll provide.”
Improvements include creating a café and child-friendly play area, and building a new deck along the Club’s eastern boundary. Barista coffees will be served from a window straight out onto the deck, and an ice cream machine will keep customers cool in the warmer months. “The café will be open from 8:30am until early afternoon for brekkie, lunch, or just a coffee on the deck in the sun,” says Mr. Skews.
The new space will be open not just to Club members, but also to the general public. “We’re proud to lend our support to a great new facility that both Club members and the wider public will be able to enjoy,” says Trust Horizon Trustee, David Bulley.
Funding from the Trust will go towards the electrical component of the project. And as Mr. Skews explains, the Trust’s backing has also served to kick-start further funding needed to make the improvements happen. “The initial injection from the Trust has given us the impetus we need to go further, and has built a real sense of enthusiasm amongst our members,” says Mr. Skews. “Huge thank you to the Trust. Without their help this project would never have got underway.”
